“Wanna bumble with the bee?” ……..Tyson Bees

Killa Bees they on a swarm

There are an increasing number of chefs leaving the confines of the restaurant and hitting the road.  I first tried Chef Tyson Wong Ophaso’s food at Chew Man Chu on Broad Street. I recall having an okay meal there, but there wasn’t really anything that made me wanna rush back. Before I got around to giving it a second chance the restaurant closed its doors. When I heard the chef was doing and Asian inspired food truck, my intrest was piqued. One of my concers at the restaurant was that the menu seemed way too large. I felt the promise was there but it just needed to be focused. Chef Tyson has found that focus and delivered a great experience on four wheels.

Located in University City at 33rd and Spruce Tyson Bees serves a nice variety of inexpensive food. You will find anything from hot dogs,  and pork buns, to bahn mi and tacos.  At  its usual spot in University City I found joy in the pork buns and short rib  tacos and refreshment in an iced coffee that eased a 90 degree day. I was also able to visit at the night Market a few weeks ago and eat more pork buns as well as an edamame taco. I am very happy I discovered this truck and can say without a doubt the hype is justified. I just hope the change in management I read about here does not have a negative affect.

SkinnyFat for the less fortunate.

We all know I love to eat. Most of you that read this blog also share this passion. I am proud to spread the word about a great event this coming Monday June 20th in Philadelphia.  Share our Strength’s Taste of the Nation is an event being held to help fight childhood hunger. There will also be food from some of my favorite restaurants and beverages from some of my favorite bars in the city. Foobooz is also offering a discount code for 15% off the cost of the tickets.

100% of ticket sales benefit organizations working to end childhood hunger! Our LOCAL beneficiaries are Philabundance, The Food Trust, The Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger, and The Pennsylvania Hunger Action Center.

If you around and can help, please support this great cause. You may even see me there.

Watch your back Breakfast! Brunch is coming for your spot. I don’t really blame Brunch either. If I had cured that many hangovers I would feel pretty important too. Brunch keeps this town going. It is very big business and since food trucks are the new darlings, a brunch truck makes a lot of sense.

La Copine Brunch Truck operates in a small garden setting at the corner of 2nd and Poplar streets in Northern Liberties. It is the same space that is late night home to the Dapper Dog and a new burrito cart as well. On Saturday and Sunday mornings starting at 11 you can enjoy a good meal in a beautiful setting for a great price. You can have a breakfast sandwich, a side and an iced beverage for $10. The Northern Liberties outpost of the Foodery is even across the street if you want to grab a beer to bring with you. Although depending what you get a six pack bight run you over $20. The breakfast sandwich with sausage egg and cheese was good, but the real star for me was the second sandwich I ordered. A flatbread sandwich with prosciutto, strawberries and blue cheese is a new favorite sandwich of mine. The menu isn’t large but what they have is great and it seems to be a hit in the neighborhood.

Sittin’ on Chrome…(memories of The Put-Put Truck)

Free Lunch. No greater words were ever spoken. Okay; maybe Free Porn, Free Booze and Free Love are up there. As a kid I was lucky enough to have some free lunches. I am sure that someones tax dollars paid for it, but to us snot nosed kids it was free lunch. In Trenton, NJ we would spend our summers at local playgrounds and around noon we would await the put-put truck. I have no idea why we called it that. I just now how we would light up when we received our tray of food.  The fight over chocolate milk has only been rivaled by the swapping of MRE’s during my time in the U.S. Army (no one wants Omelet with Ham).

During my teenage years I would take field trips to NYC and Philly and often pay for food from small hot dog and pretzel carts. I had no idea of the possibility of food on wheels. The food industry has now been assaulted from an increasing number of food trucks.  The bad news is there will be more trucks operated by people who see a trend and have no business operating a food business. The great news is variety. I love variety. These mobile restaurants have it all nowadays. From pretzels and hot dogs to tacos and bao buns. A month of food trucks. A fight to keep my waistline.
